The City Tiler is a fantastically designed wine/tapas bar in Port Melbourne. Functioning as a tiling and interior design business during the day, then a bar on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays, this place is more than worthy of a visit. It has a terrific beer garden that is surprisingly cool on a hot summer’s night. Live jazz music is played on a Friday and Saturday night giving the place a welcome vibrancy. Feel free to call them (03 9696 0444) to find out what’s in store for the nights’ entertainment as it can range from piano playing to a full five piece band. Drinks are priced averagely and bonus points are for the fresh Sangria on offer. On Saturdays the City Tiler morphs into a café that serves organic breakfast and lunch from 8am. Perfect for a friendly gathering or even a date. The venue itself is also available for functions. The bar is open from 5pm to 11pm Thursdays to Saturdays.

The City Tiler Review

Review by Mia Gaitanidis

The City Tiler (located at 115 Bay St, Port Melbourne) takes the Melbourne hybrid business model to another level.

Functioning as a tiling/interior design business during the day and a Spanish tapas bar by night (Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5pm), this could not have worked better at any other location. There are many joys here particularly if you are into aesthetics & architecture. City Tiler is the best looking place in Melbourne I’ve seen so far.

Once an 1860’s courthouse designed by noted architect JJ Clark, it then morphed into an Anglican Church, a nursery and now the City Tiler. As soon as you enter the grounds of the building, you get a true sense of its lengthy history. A couple of wooden tables, large plants and a palm tree almost obscure the small entrance of the old brick building.

Once inside you see the entire space in one eyeful. Looking up you notice how high the triangular ceiling is, exposing the 151 year old wooden beams. The Roman style arched windows are also set high, catching the bright sunshine and warming the space, both visually and physically.

The décor is not surprisingly, perfect – after all they are exceptional interior designers. Fresh flowers, huge rustic terracotta vases, wooden stools/tables and lit candelabras are scattered everywhere. Opposite the entrance is a warm log fireplace bordered by dried herbs, making you feel like you’re in a Mediterranean village. Vibrant paintings, a bookcase filled with antique books and an impressively sized bulls head adorn the stucco walls.

There’s an old piano stationed in one corner that does get played on certain nights, along with the resident Jazz band ‘Trumpet’ on Friday nights. At other times light background music is played.

The sizable beer garden with ample tables and benches is reason in itself to visit. Scattered around the garden are palm trees and a very tall hedge that cocoons the patrons from the rest of the world. It’s such an enjoyable place to spend a warm day or evening.

City Tiler specializes in Sangria, by the glass (around $10) or jug. Local (Gippsland) and importehttps://www.barsandnightclubs.com.au/files/melbourne/melbourne-south/d beers, namely from south america and europe, range from $7.50-$9.50. they also stock south american, european and australian wines ranging from $7-$15 per glass, and $25-$75 per bottle. a very limited food menu is available with modern australian/spanish cuisine ($9-$32). definitely not a night that will break your budget.

typically, patrons are professionals over 25; however it’s not the kind of place that worries about the criteria of their customers. Everyone is welcome here and you can tell by the extra friendly service. It does get really busy on a Friday/Saturday night, so unless you get there super early, it’s standing room only. On Saturdays they are also open for organic breakfast and lunch 8am-1pm.

One major flaw at this stage is that they take cash only. So if you are not prepared, you will be caught short. However, it does get bonus points for being two blocks from the beach and five minutes from the CBD.

All in all, it is worth experiencing this venue at least once.
