What To Expect @ The Grand
Review By Jason Barbin
We have all heard about the reputation for trouble the nightlife in Frankston has attracted over the last few years and most of us have probably contributed to spreading that reputation. But lately the trouble has subsided, the reputation has started to dissipate and venues around Frankston have started to grow in popularity.
The Grand Hotel on the Nepean Highway in Frankston is one of those venues and their “Retro” Fridays are fast becoming one of the more popular nights out in Frankston. As you might have guessed, retro music is the theme behind the night with resident DJs spinning commercial tunes that encourage the crowd to jump on the dance floor and show off their moves. The Grand also has numerous lounges set up for patrons who would rather have a few drinks with friends and socialise than have a boogy on the dance floor. Three pool tables have also been provided for those who fancy themselves a pool shark or those who are simply waiting for the DJ to play their favourite track.
The atmosphere steps up a notch when the venue starts to fill up and that’s where the fun really begins. The crowd is mainly represented by those in the 18-25 bracket but the Grand Hotel is still a hotspot for those in the 26-30 age bracket who are still looking for a good night out with friends. The classic hardwood floors and the velvet curtains along with the leather lounges add a touch of class to the venue while the dance floor easily holds at least 50 patrons without giving the feeling of being squashed up next to each other.
But perhaps the most enticing aspect of Retro Friday’s at the Grand Hotel is the drink specials. $5 basic spirits are most popular among patrons but other specials include $4.50 pots of Carlton Draught and $12 cocktails. The Grand Hotel also boasts a range of high end spirits including Chivas Regal Scotch, Makers Mark Bourbon, Grey Goose Vodka and Milagro Tequila, all at very modest prices. When asked about the prices of drinks, bar staff were knowledgeable and were more than happy to answer any questions even when it didn’t result in the purchase of a drink.
But when it’s all said and done, the Grand Hotel in Frankston is a good venue for night out no matter what your intentions. The drink specials make having a big night out with friends affordable and for those seeking a few quiet drinks with friends, the Grand Hotel provides comfort and entertainment.
