Melbourne Supper Club

161 Spring St, Melbourne, VIC
Visit website

The iconic Melbourne Supper Club is for adults only. It’s for people who like the taste of alcohol, appreciate and savour it. That means if you’re a drunken lout – don’t expect a great experience, or even being admitted for that matter. A huge variety of drinks await, limited only by your wallet/purse. There is no cocktail menu, however they produced every single one of the cocktails we ordered. Avoid peak times as it can get very busy, unless you’re prepared to wait to be seated. The food menu is limited, but tasty (i.e. Cheeseboard - 3 cheeses including Delice de Bourgogne at market rate, Meatballs $13.50, Sticky Date Pudding $11.50). Best for smaller groups or even solo, this place is perfect for intimate conversation. The knowledgeable waiters know their business and take their work seriously, but are always ready and polite. It’s a relief to know the Supper Club reliably operates all evening, making it ideal for very late night drinks. Open for over a decade, let’s hope the Melbourne Supper Club will remain a Melbourne stalwart for another ten years to come. Highly recommended. Open Sunday to Thursday until 4am & Friday/Saturday until 6am.

Melbourne Supper Club Review

Review By Mia Gaitanidis

Visiting the Melbourne Supper Club for the first time almost ten years ago and every few years since, I’m glad that it has remained a joyful experience. Every time I drop in, I usually miss the entrance is as it surreptitiously blends into the street façade. Situated at Level 1/161 Spring St, Melbourne - next to the regal Princess Theatre and above The European - its name appears inconspicuously on a small gold plaque next to a staircase leading to the bar, where the hostess greets and seats you.

The décor has not changed much and this I am thankful for. It has a conventional old world appeal - a mix of cozy seating (including leather Chesterfield sofas, club chairs), wood paneling and floorboards. The dim lighting consists of lamps and tea lights that are thoughtfully placed within each seating arrangement. The walls are bordered midway by bottles of alcohol, displaying the diverse options available whilst giving the bar a masculine touch. In fact, the place reeks of masculinity with its serious colour tones of brown, burgundy and antique yellow.

A large centrally placed painting of a woman holding a torch represents Columbia, the Goddess of Liberty. Her inflamed torch is bursting with concepts of enlightenment and illumination, however to most of us it’s a reminder of the cinematic Columbia Pictures logo that we have so often seen at the movies.

The best part is the far wall with its enormous modern Art Deco circular window that looks out onto a huge tree and Parliament House. The beauty of the design and the view it grants has to be seen to be appreciated.

All types of people frequent the Melbourne Supper Club, whether it is theatre attendees, the after work crowd or night owls wanting a late good quality drink. It’s definitely best suited to the over 25’s who enjoy the taste of their drink, and who earn enough to pay top shelf prices. It’s not suited to larger groups (5+) or the pre clubbing crowd, particularly as there is seating room only. Intimate dialogue is encouraged as there is no background music – which is a welcome relief to the inappropriate music that is occasionally played elsewhere.

The wine list is quite lengthy and the service is impeccable. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable about wines/cheeses and enjoyed answering our questions. There is an excellent and extensive choice of whiskies, ports, wines and cocktails which are on the pricier end of the spectrum. Wine by the glass starts at $10.50 (2007 Luna Beberide Mencia) and a glass of 2006 Archer Shiraz 2006 costs around $12.
