The City Wine Shop is both a retail wine shop and wine bar. Our primary focus is to present a well balanced range of quality wines by new and established producers from Victoria, Australia and Europe. In particular, we are major sellers of champagne and pride ourselves on being able to provide informed advice on the inherent styles. Our expertise extends to a selection of exotic spirits, liqueurs and ales. We are open for takeaway bottle sales until 11:30pm, seven days a week.

City Wine Shop Review

Review By Mia Gaitanidis

The City Wine Shop is definitely in my top ten all time favourite bars in Melbourne. One of the main reasons is that it’s a successful hybrid: bottle shop, cafe, restaurant and bar. Also, the service is friendly, the décor is Euro-Melbourne and the food is delicious.

City Wine Shop is owned by the same proprietors as The European, the Melbourne Supper Club, The Tea Room and Siglo bar. Each place has its own characteristic style and the City Wine Shop (159 Spring St, Melbourne) exudes low key European charm. The portico encases a handful of tables that continue onto the sidewalk, giving its customers views of Spring St/Parliament House.

Inside the double wooden doors it is quite a small space, allowing for bar stools and standing room, as well as the backroom which hosts a very large wooden share table. It has a rustic decor of dark wooden shelves, green wall tiles and a long wooden ladder reaching the top shelf wines.

Walking in the first thing you see on the left is an impressive wall of wines – all sold at retail. Either take the wine home or stay and drink it for a standard $15 per bottle corkage fee. You are able to order food from a select menu at any time of day, including early breakfast. Highly recommended is the memorable and delicious char grilled Tuna Nicoise salad which at $25, is worth every cent. The Lamb Shank with chorizo is also quite nice, be it a touch under seasoned. The Chicken Schnitzel with Italian Coleslaw ($24) was also mouth-watering, particularly as the bone was retained in the chicken. Scrumptious coffee, desserts and cheeses make it a one stop shop.

Another great advantage this bar has over others is the large list of wines by the glass ranging in price from $10 to $16. Not just the average stuff that is usually sold by the glass, the options included Wynns ''The Gables'' Cabernet Shiraz 2006 ($10) and Stadt Krems Steinterrassen Riesling 2007($14). The focus is on wines from Victoria (Aus) and Europe, and an expert knowledge of Champagne, exotic spirits, ales and liqueurs is available.

The ambience is like any good European bar in Italy or France, where people gather in between shopping trips, after work and casually strolling through. The crowd is usually over 30’s and comprise of politicos, intellectuals, bohemes and suits - but anyone would feel welcome because it’s that kind of place.

Unmistakably inviting and a total ‘must do’. If you want to experience the epitome of a gorgeous Euro-Melbourne wine bar, then this is it.
