First Floor 393 Review

Review By Catherine Falalis

If you’re looking for a night out with friends in a relaxed yet playful environment then I suggest you climb your way up the stairs to First Floor 393. Located in Fitzroy on its busy Brunswick Street, First Floor is the go-to place for those after a laidback night spent with good company and a few drinks.

Upon entering, warm colours splashed amongst the decor will greet you. Red cushioned booths coupled with dimly lit, oriental style bubble lanterns set the mood to be both intimate and cosy. You’ll also notice the array of funky artwork covering the walls, adding a street-like-grunge to the overall atmosphere.

Entry will only set you back a mere $10, a small price to pay in comparison to what other clubs of the like charge these days.

Apple Crumble Martini anyone? Just one of the many cocktails First Floor has to offer, prices ranging from $11-$16. Or if you prefer to stick to basics, you’re in luck! $5 basics until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays definitely won’t leave you with any complaints.

The spacious dance floor is ideal for those of you who like to party… hard. And the music won’t disappoint, catering to the styles of house, RnB and old-school disco, depending on the given night and DJ. First Floor also has events throughout the year with the occasional live band entertainment or burlesque dancers.

If dancing is not your thing, then rest your feet and sit down with a couple of drinks in one of the intimate booths on offer. These VIP lounges are great for special functions and can be reserved especially for you and your friends prior to the night, via booking.

There’s a Space Invaders machine and an old school photo booth. Need I say more?

The venue attracts an older crowd, ranging from those in their 20’s and above. The attire is casual – so no heels required ladies!

First Floor is a great place to kick back with a few mates in a relaxed atmosphere. Be warned however, business doesn’t get busy until later on in the night so if you’re after a crowd, don’t stop by too early.

A 2nd Review of First Floor 393

Review By Jessica Hoadley

It was Friday night and the queue for Perseverance was at least an hour’s wait so up the stairs to First Floor we went.

Baulking at the $10 entry (I’m an unemployed Arts graduate), I asked the girl on the door what to expect. She promised us it doesn’t get packed ’til 3 am, but that it’s “fun and comfortable” up there right now.

Note to self: comfortable = empty.

R’n’B, reggae and hiphop tunes were blasting into the deserted dance floor, and the security guard amused us by describing the place as “the dive of Brunswick street,” suggesting we shouldn’t come here until everywhere else has closed for the night. At least he was honest.

The drinks were great, though: a huge selection of quality cocktails for $11-$12, and friendly bar staff. As we only had an hour to go until the place would allegedly “pack out” we took a comfy couch and watched the clientele trickle in. No age or dress restrictions here, even sneakers are fine for girls.

The space is kitted out with lanterns and cigarette venders, red couches and retro touches like a space invaders machine. It’s a bit scruffy and grungy; very Brunswick St.

Some people hung around the couches yelling over the music, and others hit the dancefloor straight away. They danced exuberantly, perhaps due to the vast amount of square metres of floor per person. Here’s the place to come if you love a bit of space to showcase your most vigorous moves.

We were too sober and there too early to enjoy this club at its finest, however those happy souls on the dance floor definitely found it “fun and comfortable.” First Floor could be a good place to end the night if you’re out in Fitzroy late on a Friday or Saturday and everything else closes.
