What to Expect @ Tavern 42 Degrees South

By Renata Sain

Tavern 42 Degrees South, or T42 as locals say, is a stylish and contemporary bar smack bang in the middle of Hobart’s prime waterfront area, overlooking the old wharf area and its modern yacht fleet, and close by to the Henry Jones heritage buildings and the Tasmanian University’s School of Fine Art.

T42 attracts a mixture of clientele of all ages ranging from the sophisticated diners that frequent the upmarket restaurants that share the pier with T42, to business people clad in suits, casual waterfront folk and art school students.

The seating area by the bar is not that large and you have definitely scored if you can manage to bag a seat on the retro styled lounge that takes centrepiece in T42 – although in saying that, people seem happy to stand around in this popular and often crowded venue and more room becomes available as the dining area opens up later in the night. There are also outside tables on both sides of the pier that T42 is stationed on, but beware it can get quite chilly sitting by the water at night so aim for a spot by one of the outdoor gas heaters.

By night, this is definitely a place to flaunt your designer tastes and contemporary style if that’s your fancy, but jeans, t-shirts and street shoes work well too and helps to give the place a bit of edge as does the perfectly acceptable locally made fleece and wool options, a signature item of Hobart living.

DJs playing an infusion of electronica and dance crank up the atmosphere, but as dark and happening as this place gets, it’s no dance bar. Rather, T42 is the type of venue you head to when you don’t want to go out to a nightclub, but you still want to be out and about for a bit of excitement ‘in style’. And just in case you do get that urge to kick on after the staff have asked you to leave for around the third time at 1am when the bar is closing, there are plenty of late night options close by.

T42 is open daily for breakfast from 7.30 to 11.30am, lunch from midday to 3pm and dinner from 6pm to 10pm with prices generally between the $5 to $40 ranges. Coffee and cake is also available at all times and bar food is also available until late with prices starting from around $7.

A full bar menu is on offer including a selection of over 200 wines starting from around $30 to $400, a full selection of malt whiskeys and spirits from around $7, beers from $4.20 and cocktails at $17.

And with as many as 50 Tasmanian wine varieties available as well as a number of Tasmanian beers, cheeses, seafood and other quality produce on offer, T42 makes a great choice for an all round ‘taste of Tasmania’.
