East Review
Review By Jenna Boister
This is my new favourite club. Having given up on the trashiness of Surfers Paradise, this sophisticated haven in Broadbeach has now become my club of choice on the Gold Coast. The nightclubs in Surfers have employed gorgeous girls and guys to stand outside their venues and coax guests in with offers of free entry, or even free drinks. East doesn’t need these gimmicks to get people through their doors. Crowds come here, put on their finest apparel, stand in line, and pay the high entrance fee because it’s a club with a difference.
What other clubs do you know that have a make-up artist in the bathroom on hand to keep you looking beautiful after a few hours of sweating it out on the dance floor? Or have humorous bouncers, who are ready to light your cigarette when you walk outside for a smoke?
As you walk through the wooden doors adorned with golden dragons, you feel like you’ve entered an artist’s playground. Never before have I seen so many different materials, colours, patterns and textures in one place, which combine together so brilliantly. Glass chandeliers, lanterns, wooden tiered pillars, stone statues, chains, metal swords and carved wooden tables, all bathed in red, gold, blue and purple lighting. There are even framed pictures on the ceiling over one of the luxury bar areas!A lot of effort has gone into creating a unique entertainment venue. With aerial acrobats, sexy topless male waiters, fire dancers, masquerade-style stilt walkers, local and international DJ’s and exceptional live music acts… I’d say their efforts have paid off.
But as the good old saying goes, you get what you pay for, and I’ll be honest – it’s a pricey club. There’s a $20 entry fee (except for their Sex and Chocolate nights every Thursday which is free for the ladies). A beer will set you back roughly $8, spirits $8.50 and cocktails $18. But when you get this kind of classy, one-of-a-kind venue, there’s a good chance prices will be high. The average age of the crowd is between 25-35 years old, but because of its high-class and sophistication, there’s usually a few older people there too.
East has a smart evening dress code, but when it comes to fashion, as outlined on their website, they encourage “individuality and uniqueness”. Without imposing super-strict dress codes, they trust their club-goers to dress well. And in my opinion, they do. There seems to be a mutual respect here when it comes to dress code. Respect the classy, up-market vibe of East, and in turn they won’t restrict your own style of fashion.
So if you’re over your regular clubs and your nightlife needs a bit of spicing up (or if you just feel like perving on the gorgeous girls or topless waiters), head down to East for a spectacular night out!
