Molly Review

Hidden away in the depths of Civic, Molly is one of Canberra’s most intriguing bars. Previously described as a bar straight out of the 1920s, Molly is a breath of fresh air. The gorgeous “speakeasy style” is perfect for all those vintage enthusiasts. The owner has done their best to make the bar as authentic as possible and done a wonderful job of it. As if it was the 1920s, you can’t see any technology. The points of sale are cleverly hidden away behind the counters adding to the authenticity.

During quiet times, Molly has a very relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. The dim, candle-lit mood lighting and 1920s themed music creates the perfect chilled environment. It is a great place to go grab a cocktail with your friends and just relax until the early hours of the morning. During busy times however, the place really comes alive. Sitting space can be scarce, but there is plenty of room to stand.

Molly attracts a very varied crowd which changes at differing points through the evening. You can find people anywhere from 19-year-old, fresh-faced youngster, all the way through to the youngsters-at-heart who have a few more decades of experience behind then.

Finding this hidden gem online is easy enough, but finding it in person, that’s a whole different story. On their Facebook page, you will find the location vaguely listed as “Hobart Place”, or if you venture onto their website, a set of coordinates “-35° 16′ 46.45″ S – 149° 7′ 35.23″ E”. In person it’d be easy to mistake Molly’s doors for the entryway to a basement. You won’t find any big flashing signs, or a banner of any sort; just a simple unmarked door that occasionally sports a velvet red rope out the front.

Need a cocktail after a hard day at work or a cool place to get a drink with friends at the end of the week? Molly has you covered. Their doors are open Monday to Saturday, from 4 in the afternoon until the 2 in the morning giving you plenty of time to get your Molly fix.

Prices really vary depending on what you are after. For your standard beer and wine, you’re looking at between $9 and $13. You can get whiskey, gin and rum from $8, tequila from $11, cocktails from $10 or try one of their delicious signature cocktails from $17. If you’re feeling really flash, why not try some of the $4800 cognac. For those non-drinkers, the lovely Molly guys are more than happy to mix up a delicious mocktail to satisfy your tastebuds.

If you’re after more than just a drink, Molly also offers an array of nibbles to satisfy your needs. The Charcuterie offers nuts, olives, dips, cheese and meat plates as well as Spanish, Italian and French inspired plates with prices ranging from $6-$25.

So grab some friends and go visit the guys who, as they have aptly put it, have brought a little New Orleans to Canberra.
