The Melbourne Hotel Review

Review By Maria Bailey

At 110-years-old, this old darling wears it well. Sure, she’s had a new facelift and a few nips and tucks (7 millions dollars worth), but The Melbourne Hotel understands the importance of keeping up with the nations fastest growing capital. What was once a working mans water hole, this West End institution is now a stylish hotspot that has all the glitz and glam to attract the trendy masses.

Decked out with funky-looking circular seating booths, modern intimate lighting and three luxurious bars, you can’t fail to be impressed by its new revamped look. However, the attention to detail doesn’t stop at the aesthetics–a great amount of consideration has gone into designing a variety of spaces offering different forms of entertainment. If you fancy sitting down with a chilled brew and watching the game, rest assured with sixty plasma televisions mounted on the walls, you won’t be fighting over the remote with one of the regulars. There’s a new nightclub upstairs for the young, a casino styled games room on the ground floor for the old and a bar, restaurant and cafe for everyone else in between. Old or young, The Melbourne welcomes everyone into its doors.

Fancy a drink? Well, the bars are brimming with various alcoholic beverages. If you’re partial to a glass of vino, then you’ll be in your element when you set your eyes on the wine list. With nine-hundred local, national and international wines in the hotels cellars, there’s a fine range for your sophisticated palate. If wine doesn’t suit your fancy, then maybe the golden ale will. There’s fourteen beers on tap, including the Melbourne Pale, a creation of their very own. They also offer nineteen of the imported varieties by the bottle. If you fancy a change from the traditional basic spirits, then why not take a gander at the cocktail menu. With fourteen fruity concoctions to choose from, you will get your taste buds going in no time.

The food at The Melbourne should not be overlooked. From breakfast to tapas to the a la carte menu at the prestigious Twelve restaurant, all the menus focus on a seasonal approach ensuring that the dishes are ever evolving in correlation with the seasons. The menu’s tend to draw on Asian and European influences, producing unique flavoursome dishes. So, if you enjoy quality food without the huge price tag, then it will pay to dine at restaurant Twelve.

From the aesthetics, spaces, drinks, and food, it appears that variety is The Melbourne’s number one policy. With such variety and perfected service, it becomes abundantly clear why this place continues to be in business since its opening in 1890. Through years of service, it has something that most places don’t: over a century’s worth of experience, with looks that challenge the youthful inexperienced bars entering Brisbane’s bar scene.

Prices: wine $6.50-$10 per glass; beer $5-$8; cocktails $14-$15 and food $11.50-$32.
