The Sky Room in Fortitude Valley is a cocktail bar with high expectations, due to its award-winning counterpart, The Bowery. Within its first few months, the Sky Room was honoured with prestigious nominations in the Australian Gourmet Traveller Magazine National Restaurant Awards (AGT): Bar of the Year and in the Australian Bartender Magazine: New Bar of the Year. Taking its name from a lounge in Honolulu international airport in the mid 20th century, the Sky Room is the rooftop cocktail bar with sweeping views of Fortitude Valley.

The Sky Room Review

Review By John Warwick

Inspired by the sophisticated yet laidback lifestyle of the late 50s and early 60s, the Sky Room is a well-blended concoction of 60s retro and tropical paradise, with a dash of modern class. Its elevated and secluded location makes it a secret oasis from the chaotic streets of Fortitude Valley.

Unlike the dark, dim lit interior of its counterpart, the Bowery, the Sky Room is a spacious, brightly lit cocktail bar which somewhat resembles a 60s summer resort. The Sky Room is a cocktail bar that is popular among its regulars and not tainted by the masses of mainstream clubbers. Located on the corner of Wickham and Brunswick Street, the Sky Room is an elevated cocktail bar that overlooks the Valley skyline. The Sky Room is unnoticeable on street level, with only a selected few knowing the location.

After a short elevator ride (or long walk up the stairs) to the second level, you will find yourself immersed in a world where the union of 60s lifestyle and modern design create a laidback and sophisticated atmosphere. The decor of the Sky Room resembles a 60s tropical resort, with retro furniture and potted palm trees surrounding the room. The balcony is located around the outskirts of the room where you can watch society stumble through the streets, completely oblivious to the oasis escape the Sky Room brings.

The patrons of the Sky Room are people who appreciate the laidback 60s lifestyle and a good cocktail menu. This well – dressed and sophisticated crowd are between 20 – 30 years old. You will not find young teen clubbers shuffling around the Sky Room due to the lack of Vodka Cruisers and the music ranging from folk, funk and reggae.

The cocktail menu of the Sky Room reflects the tropical ambience it exudes, with numerous cocktails mixed with tropical and fruit flavoured juices. They range from unique Sky Room concoctions to popular and classic cocktails, with a price range of $16 – $22. Though there is a strong focus on cocktails, they still provide basic wine, beer and spirits.

The Sky Room is a rooftop oasis where you can escape and watch the world pass by. Its 60s inspired tropical decor and laidback atmosphere makes the Sky Room a cocktail bar where you can relax and enjoy a sophisticated cocktail without the large crowds and over-the-top nightlife scene.
