Barsoma Review
Review By Katrina Beavan
Whilst wandering the outer laneways of Brisbane's Fortitude Valley, you'll most likely hear Barsoma before you see it. More often than not, they'll be rockin' live music drifting out into the sporting nightlife of Fortitude Valley, enticing you to come in... and go in you shall.
The first area to draw your ever attentive gaze will be the bar; not only because dodging drunken party goers in the Valley is an intensive sport and leaves you wanting a stiff drink, but because the dimly-lit, exotically stocked bar simply oozes ambience and beacons invitingly. The drinks are a little on the steep side ($7.50 for a gin and tonic) but the mood is perfect.
Drink in hand, I recommend the dance enthusiast get themselves to the dance floor and cut it up to one of Brisbane's young talented bands if they're playing. But be assured, bobbing your head along awkwardly while sitting by couch or table is perfectly acceptable too. If the loud music is doing your head in however, simply amble on outside into one of the most accommodating smokers area I have seen in Brisbane's night life. That's right: no more standing, crammed into a tiny rooftop terrace all sardine-like, inhaling at the speed of light. Smokers here have free reign to walk and puff if they so choose! In fact, the outside area is great to simply chill out - cigarette in hand or no - under the cool gaze of the night sky.
Other than great live music, this place plays some pretty modern stuff to appease the young patrons, aged 18-26ish. This is usually later on, once the dancing juices are freely flowing. Barsoma makes an awesome drinking hot spot on the weekends, but it is a little more relaxed than the techno-pumping clubs around the corner. Also, if you're aching from thirsty Thursday syndrome, suffer no more! Head along each week from 5pm to enjoy some good live music, cheap drinks, and $5 pizzas (which are delicious, even more so because they are just $5) - not to mention there's free entry on Thursdays!
Whether you walk on in to enjoy a chilled end-of week hangout session, or a jive and some stronger refreshments, Barsoma makes a great night out. With three and a half disco balls out of five, this place is, to quote the king of partying Charlie Sheen himself, 'winning'.
