Retro Bar Review

Review by Rhian Deutrom

A stroll down a nondescript laneway in the middle of the western suburbs will reveal the latest addition to Brisbane’s cocktail culture. The Retro Bar in Kenmore has brought Melbourne’s famous laneway bar tradition to Suburbia, transporting its discerning customers back to a time of great drinks and excellent company.

The 60 person capacity bar provides an intimate meeting place for small groups, offering a premium selection of beer, wine and cocktails at reasonable prices. International beers fill the fridges with Peroni and Grolsch on tap for $8-$10. The eclectic wine list will cater to the sharpest wine connoisseur while experienced and approachable staff reveal colourful tales behind each product. Cocktails range from $14-$17, offering sun drenched Mai Tais and Pina Coladas, the dirtiest of Martinis and a list devoted entirely to the pursuit of the perfect liquid dessert. Mad Men’s Don Draper would fit the bar to a tee, legs crossed and sipping lazily on a scotch after a long day at work.

Vintage vinyl records line the walls while lava lamps provide an intimate glow to peruse the extensive menu. Low lighting and blue-brown themes create an ultra modern space with subtle retro twists. Turquoise swivel chairs channel minimalist sixties chic while psychedelic designer wall prints take you back to the seventies.

As the name suggests, the venue combines trends from eras gone past; after enjoying a Tom Collins or experiencing the bar’s signature ‘Kenmore Cosmo’, a disco ball will light up the dance floor as music from different eras lets patrons relive the ‘good old days’.

Tuesday nights host The Sit Down Comedy Club’s Open Mic night while Thursday’s live music showcases local talent from across the city. Retro movies play on a 4m cinema screen, offering a tasteful setting for an intimate evening.

This bar is ideal for 25+ crowds who appreciate a spectacular drink in stylish surroundings. Don’t be fooled, the venue’s suburban location has not taken away from its contemporary flair. Rather, its casual elegance welcomes patrons from far and wide to experience their younger days, take in the present and drink to their future.
