Red Room Review

Review by Larissa Willems

Located in the heart of University of Queensland, The Red Room is everything you could want in a student bar. It’s cheap, fun and non-pretentious; the perfect place to unwind before exams or party hard after them.

As you walk in you will be welcomed by the friendly security at the door and will be greeted by the smell of burgers and chips wafting from the kitchen. The type of people you will find here are predominately students, so if you’re looking to make some new friends or grumble about your studies this is the place you want to visit. You can wear almost anything inside this bar; from denim shorts and thongs to a suit with dress shoes, practically anything goes. That’s part of the charm of the Red Room.

Another great thing about the Red Room is its décor. Nothing too fancy or overly extravagant, the Red Rooms décor consists mainly of comfortable couches, pool tables and plasmas mounted on walls playing music videos. The perfect balance of a place to celebrate with friends or to grab a coffee with that person in your lecture you’ve had your eye on for a while. A pleasant surprise is the bathrooms in the Red Room. For a student bar you would expect paper towel mess on floors or black marker doodling on walls, but not here. Always clean and sanitary, you don’t feel dirtier coming out than you did going in, which is a lot to say about the restrooms in other bars.

The food is also a huge incentive to visit the Red Room. With $2 chips and 2 for 1 burgers as well as other offers on at this bar, it’s clear to see why this is a favorite among the students at UQ. The prices here are hard to beat for such quality food and drinks.

The Red Room also has themed nights for almost every day of the week. Monday is live bands, Tuesday is Trivia Night, Wednesday is Karaoke; the list goes on and makes certain that once you visit the Red Room once, you’ll want to come back.

Overall, the Red Room offers everything you would want in a student bar and more; great food, a lively atmosphere and welcoming staff. I wouldn’t suggest you go out of your way to visit this venue, but it is definitely a place to check out if you ever find yourself at the UQ Campus.

A Second Review of Red Room

Review By Katrina Beavan

Even though the name conjures up imagines of burlesque dancing and Moulin Rouge flash backs, it's just your average university bar, packed with a young, edgy crowd and super cheap drinks. Situated on the picturesque University of Queensland campus, the newly renovated Red Room is the perfect place to kick back and enjoy, pool cue in one hand, beer in the other.

Targeted at students, the best way to describe the bar is hip, fresh and relaxed. Refreshingly back to basics, you can lounge in a lounge, dabble in some pool or simply unwind on the balcony overlooking the canopy of trees and the lakes, sipping in a bubble of ambience. Another plus of being the student hangout is that the drinks are fast and cheap (insert inappropriate joke here). We're talking $5 spirits and ciders... can I hear an amen?

As well as being an awesome hangout, the bar is host to a number of lively events. Friday nights give us some fun live music, featuring a few of Brisbane's talented local acts. Open mic nights are a regular as well and are always good for a laugh, and on the rare occasion when an actual talented individual belts out a few tunes, good to enjoy as well. Even pyjama parties and croquet tournaments get the occasional go.

But the bar is not just for students: it's a great place for everyone to hang out, and the young, lively patrons make a fun and exciting atmosphere. This place makes a mean meal as well, guaranteed to tempt your tastebuds and your wallet won't hate you, which is always a plus. The layout is another positive: think very open plan and inviting. The red leather booths are especially cool, and make a great setting for a private chat - or you can head on outside to enjoy the classic pub table and stool ensemble.

Closing at midnight, Red Room is a great place to chill out and relax or pre drink and hype up for the night. Everyone knows in terms of priorities, drinking is high on the list for students. That means lots of early to midweek fun AS WELL as weekend shenanigans. That's right, while the valley and city are fast asleep during the week, hit up this ultimate uni bar for a great time. After all, I don't give it four disco balls out of five for nothing.
