H Lounge at the Hamilton Hotel

Review by Julia Bartrim

While the Hamilton Hotel caters for those looking for a couple of beers and an opportunity to watch sporting events on widescreen TVS, upstairs the newly launched H Lounge offers something a bit fancier.

The Hamilton Hotel is located on the corner of the buzzing entertainment precinct of Racecourse Drive, and the steps up to the H Lounge are tucked away out the back.

The H Lounge is warmly lit, intimate, and simply decorated. Small, private sitting rooms are lined with black couches to the left of the bar and a small semi-circular dance floor fills the far corner. The bar is the highlight in terms of decor, lit by chandeliers with an elegant array of brilliantly coloured spirits on display.

Cocktails are popular and reasonably priced (you can expect to pay from around $12 to $18). The bar-tenders are friendly and helpful even as they adjust to a new bar and the smell of crushed mint and other herbs infuse the air. Do be aware that there are no pre-mixed drinks on offer.

If you plan to go here, ladies, don’t forget your heels, as the dress-code is cocktail. There are men in suits, and the women are similarly well-dressed, sleek in heels and jewellery. The crowd are mostly young professionals, sipping cocktails and talking in small groups.

When the DJ warms up a couple of people hit the dance floor and a smoke machine frames their figures in blue smoky light. The music is a mix of dance tracks plus songs from artists like Flight Facilities (Crave You), Janet Jackson (Together Again), and old jazz numbers converted into dance tracks. However, the venue is small and open plan and the DJs is loud, so if you feel like a chat it is difficult to escape the noise

If you’re looking to get here, it may be easier to catch a bus from the city as on Saturday nights (the only night the venue is open) - the parking is bumper to bumper along Racecourse Drive. A one-way taxi fare will set you back around $30.00.

Although presumably popular with locals, it might take a little effort to convince city folks to make the 6 km journey out to Hamilton given there is only the one nightclub on offer. But perhaps a chance to escape from some of the excesses of the city or the Valley is part of the attraction.

And combine this with a meal at one of the many restaurants on Racecourse Drive , or a movie at the nearby Portside Dendy and the newly launched H Lounge offers the possibility of a very good night out.
