The Little Pub Just Off Hindley St Review

Review by Imogen Richards

Established in 1851, The Little Pub Just Off Hindley Street is one of the few remaining heritage listed bars in Adelaide’s CBD. Although it is listed as a ‘pub’, this title is deceiving as the venue is best known locally for its late-night opening hours and pleasingly cheap drinks specials.

Open Monday through Friday from 12 noon until 6 am, Saturdays until 5am and Sundays from 11 am until 6am, this marks the perfect spot for either a quiet after work/uni drink or nightcap to finish off a busy night out. Happy hours are featured Monday to Saturday from 4pm until 6pm, with additional Friday and Saturday specials between 8pm and 10pm (cheeky $2 base spirits are also featured from time to time, usually around the 12am mark).

Typically, specials have included $6 Vodka mixers, $5 local pints, and cocktails varying in the $8-$10 range. Specialist drinks are of a fairly standard variety, though the prices offered leave customers with little to complain about. If you are looking for something more high-end in the mixology department, there are plenty of nearby alternatives available down the Adelaide’s west end.

One appealing feature of The Little Pub Just Off Hindley Street is its privacy. Situated behind the Tattersalls’ owned backpackers, the bar cannot be viewed from the street hence passers-by frequently do not realise it exists! In order to access entrance to the bar you can walk through the Hindley Street opening adjacent the Tattersalls bottle shop, though this also means passing by the street-front facilities of 12 plus pokie machines. Alternatively, there is also an entrance via Gilbert Street next to Adelaide’s internationally renowned Pancake Kitchen. This provides direct access for those wanting either to avoid stairs or more easily relocate large groups.

During peak service hours The Little Pub Just Off Hindley Street also offers a range of functions packages catering for between 30 and 100 people. Both upstairs and downstairs are available for hire with optional free DJs from 9pm. Minimum spend is generally around the $500 mark (significantly less than you would find elsewhere in the heart of the CBD).

In addition to the previously mentioned beers and spirits, an ample selection of local wines is also available throughout the day and night. Chesterfield couches and wood panelling also contribute to the tavern-esque feel of the place and perfectly compliment a relaxing glass of McLaren Vale Shiraz or Barossa Merlot. If you are an avid sports fan also, numerous digital television sets adorning the walls downstairs typically feature local games during quiet afternoons and late-nights during the week.

In short, The Little Pub Just Off Hindley Street represents a quintessential South Australian hospitality hallmark not to be missed. For any persons visiting the state temporarily or any local residents priding themselves on knowing the best venues close at hand, be sure to pop in at any time of day or night and experience a taste of historical Adelaide.
